Deep sea fishermen have never been con- sidered fashion icons, but credit must be given where credit is due. The chic designs of Saint James apparel are based
on the original Breton seaman’s
sweater that was designed in
1850 for deep sea fishermen
off the coast of Normandy.
The sweaters were manufac-
tured for seafaring merchants
who traveled from Brittany to
England to sell their goods
and featured the now iconic,
then innovative side button
collar. The sweater became much like a uniform
for the merchants and its distinct striped design
made it easily identifiable when approaching ports.
